Even though Karel Fichter and the Lubov Orchestra are not readily called to mind when recommending recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor or the Symphony No. 8 in F major, their performances on this budget disc are actually quite nice and serviceable for anyone who needs a decent CD for study. The recording is not as sharp as one might wish, nor is the sound especially resonant, but the limited reproduction takes second place to the performances, which are respectable for their energy and commitment, and surprisingly enjoyable for their vitality. Fichter's interpretations are mainstream, so there are no attempts at authentic performance practice on the one hand, or post-Romantic twentieth century style on the other, but something agreeably in the middle: tempos are brisk, lines are crisp, and first movement repeats are taken, though the orchestra plays modern instruments and sounds as if its size accords with the conventional symphony orchestra. Granted, this album will not replace cherished favorites, nor should it be heard exclusively, for there are many interesting ways to play these symphonies, and the more recordings one knows, the better these masterpieces may be understood. But among budget reissues, this disc is certainly acceptable and worth considering when purchasing options are restricted.
