Sher-Oo! was
Cilla Black's third British LP and, like its predecessors, it was produced by the legendary
George Martin. As with Cilla Sings a Rainbow, there is a mixture of '60s pop like "What the World Needs Now Is Love" and standards such as "Un Homme et Une Femme," all immaculately scored by
George Martin. The general result is a pleasant album, but hardly groundbreaking in comparison to her rival,
Dusty Springfield, later that year producing the classic
Dusty in Memphis album.
Sher-Oo! fared well in the British charts -- a Top Ten album back in 1968. Presumably, its success was promoted by her TV show, Cilla. The theme tune, "Step Inside Love," is one of the few
Lennon-
McCartney compositions offered to another artist in their latter writing period. Although featured on this album, the song can be found in subsequent retrospectives, which will more than satisfy all but
Cilla Black fanatics. If you are one, you'll probably find much to enjoy on this album. ~ Rob Flanagan
